Eye Primers/Bases - My Favourites...

I love me a good eye primer/base. Even from right from back in the day when I was first getting into eyeshadow, I was all about the Urban Decay Primer Potion (you know, the OG eye primer). I have always appreciated the power of a good eye base. No matter how good the quality of the shadows themselves that you're using, a solid eye primer will help not only aid quicker and easier application - helping the shadows apply their most pigmented and also blend smoothly and seamlessly - but also, most importantly, it'll help keep your look safely in place all day/night long, preventing any dreaded fading, creasing or drop-down. It's safe to say I have definitely moved on from the likes of UD's Primer Potion (though it remains a favourite of mine for certain looks/occasions) so without any further ado - let's discuss some of my go-to's when it comes to a solid eye base...

REVOLUTION CONCEAL AND DEFINE CONCEALER IN 'C1' - If I don't want to use a 'traditional' eye primer or base that day, sometimes I simply use whatever concealer I'm using and it typically does the trick! Like I said, I tend to reach for whatever concealer I have to hand, but perhaps my most favourite I've tried in this way is the Revolution Conceal and Define! Not only is this a bangin' concealer, turns out it's also a pretty good eye base too. Full coverage that creates a smooth and even canvas, with a demi-matte finish - sounds great, right? Personally, due to it being a concealer as opposed to an 'actual' eye primer/base, I do find I need to lightly set it before going in with any shadow so that they blend the best and don't crease - you maybe if you're a fan of the un-set base technique, this may not be The One for you - but if you do like a set base or perhaps like to dabble in both methods (like myself), this could well be a good shout if you're not wanting to invest in a 'proper' eye base...

REVOLUTION CUT CREASE CANVAS IN 'ILLUSTRATE' - Another Revolution base comes from their Cut Crease Canvas! This is actually my go-to for on top of my eyeshadow - if that makes any sense. As the name suggests, this is a perfect companion product for the perfect cut crease and so, you actually use this in-between your eyeshadow application as opposed to the first step. Once you've applied all your crease/corner shades, simply use this on a small, flat brush to carve out your crease - whatever eyeshadow style you may be doing, from a full cut crease to a half cut, halo eye and so on - lightly set it into place and then continue your look by applying your lid shade/s on top! As I mentioned, I do find I need to lightly set this also before applying shadows on top - especially as with this product it's usually shimmers/glitters/foils being applied - but I still find them to apply and adhere just as pigmented and intense, so all's good!

P.LOUISE BASE IN '02 RUMOUR' - Onto perhaps the most infamous of them all, especially over the past year or so - the P.Louise Makeup Base! Remember when this became a huge thing and everyone was raving on and on about how good it was? Well, I eventually caved and bought it for myself and let's just say, I could definitely see where all the hype was coming from! This base has a slightly thicker consistency but simply patting a layer (which is not too thick, but also not too thin) over the lid creates a gorgeous, tacky base for your shadows! It's also super full coverage so really creates a nice, clean slate for your eye look. Used right, this base actually does work well un-set (there's never any issues when blending or creasing throughout the day) but actually, I've come to realise that it still performs virtually the same if you do choose to set it lightly beforehand too - so I guess it all depends on your technique preference!

URBAN DECAY PRIMER POTION - Finally, as I mentioned at the very start of this post - this is the OG eye primer for me. The one I started using as I started getting properly into eyeshadow 'back in the day' (we're talking maybe around 5-ish years ago?) and although I have found others since that I love maybe a little more, it's still one I find myself coming back to occasionally. Unlike the others, which are more like a concealer texture - with high, if not full coverage that creates a lovely blank canvas on the lid - this is more like your 'old school' eye primer that adds a light wash of somethin' somethin', but more so concentrates on its priming qualities, with its slightly tacky finish. So, not so much a base I reach for nowadays when doing more full, intense, dramatic (you get this gist) kinda looks when you want a really smooth, even lid, but perhaps if I'm doing something more 'basic', it's a great primer for just helping the shadows adhere well and blend nicely. And perhaps because it's the most 'traditional' eye primer of them all, it goes without saying that this one most definitely does not require any setting before applying shadows on top!
