I spoke a fair few months back now about how the then-newest Real Techniques brush on the block - the Sculpting Brush - had won my heart for contouring purposes. It's densely-packed so packs a punch on the pigment but still has enough movement to blend it all out, while the angled shape makes it super-easy to get right into the curves of the face. Love, love, LOVE. However, after watching many a Pixiwoo video of late (the genius sisters behind the whole RT brand) and seeing either Sam or Nic using the very same brush to apply their base with - it got me intrigued. Apparently, while the Sculpting Brush is a very good contouring brush, it also works just as well with foundation. So, finally this month I decided to listen up and give it a go. Here's what I found...
In short - I like it, a lot. I mainly ended up giving this technique a go a couple of weeks back in particular as after a mammoth brush-cleaning sesh I realised all my typical foundation tools were out of action (anyone else find themselves in that kinda pickle after cleaning their brushes?) and with the Sculpting Brush calling my name, it was time. I put it to the best alongside my usual base of choice and really enjoyed it. All of the qualities I mentioned above that made it such a good applicator for all things sculpting-related were the same things that also made it really good for foundation. The dense bristles meant it worked in a similar way to one of my other faves from Real Techniques - the Expert Face Brush - and so gave a good amount of coverage while still having the flexibility to really blend it all in beautifully so you're not left looking Cake Face-esque. The only noticeable difference between the two of course is the angled cut of the Sculpting Brush which - as equally applies for base as well as contouring - means you can really get into every nook and cranny of the face and makes smaller, more intricate areas like the nose super-easy.
So what have I learnt from this whole makeup tool experiment (other than I have a new foundation brush in my collection that has been staring me in the face all this time)? Well - a). Real Technqiues brushes are awesome as always and b). Don't write a brush off after it fulfils its supposed main use - you never know what other makeup-related tasks you could carry out with it...
