Last week was a very exciting one - I began my training to *hopefully* become a Nail Technician! I don't think I've mentioned it round these parts before now (perhaps I did somewhere on Twitter, who knows) but at the start of the year I booked onto a Complete Nail Technician course at a local beauty college. I know this isn't my usual kind of post, but I fancied having a chat with you lovely lot and giving you the deets on the whole thing - the backstory, how it all went and my plans looking ahead. Sound good? Carry on reading...
Having finished my A Levels last June and deciding not to go to Uni, I've spent a lot of time since then trying to plan and execute my next move. Ideally, I wanted to get a full-time job in beauty retail, as I knew beauty was where my passion lies, but it just wasn't happening. Not much has really been coming up in my area, and when there has I've either not heard back or I have managed to get an interview - only for it to be unsuccessful. I have been looking at other job options and widening my search as time's gone on - but in general, I've not had much luck. My current part-time job that I got to run alongside my A Levels nearly three years ago now (how has that happened?!) is getting tiring, and obviously I want to move into something that offers more hours at some point so I can look at moving forward with my life - getting a car, and moving out in a few years...maybe. Some time during all this, I decided I needed to take back control (rather than feeling like I'm simply waiting for something to happen, and not knowing when that'll be or if it'll even happen at all) and do more to get out of the situation I'm in and I decided to take a course.
At first, I was looking at makeup courses, as that's probably the area of beauty I'm most interested in, though over time I started thinking more about the possibility of studying nails instead. As you lot know by my frequent 'Polish Pick' posts and general frequent musings on nails in general - I love all things surrounding the topic and I guess it comes in at pretty close to my love for makeup. I started looking more into nail courses, and settled on going the whole hog and trying the Nail Technician. If you're gonna do something eh? I booked in, and before I knew it the week was here.
Originally I arranged to do the Complete Nail Technician course (as opposed to the Complete Nail and Toe Technician) as I didn't fancy doing Pedicure right away (proper 'foot-phobe' right here), though before I knew it I ended up doing the extra day anyway - it's best to get it out the way and under my belt I suppose! We studied one 'system' per day - with the first four I'd originally booked on to do being Manicure, Fibreglass and Silk, UV Gel and Gel Polish and Acrylic. Within those areas we also covered all the basic foundation knowledge (health and safety etc.) and matters such as massage, tip application, sculpting and how to remove it all! It sure was a jam-packed week, that's fo' sho'. We were given a manual with everything we need to know inside to keep and the option to purchase a kit (something I chose to do) and now there's just the matter of practicing and learning all the theory stuff for my assessment in a month or so!
All in all, I cannot describe how glad I am already to have just bitten the bullet and done this course. I feel like I'm finally doing something that feels 'right' and fingers crossed - with some hard work and practice - come a few weeks' time I'll be able to slowly begin to turn it into a potential career path. I met some lovely ladies and my confidence has really grown - and so has my passion and interest in all things beauty-related (as if that was ever possible?!). Hopefully things are starting to turn a corner at last, and I for one am very chuffed about that indeed...
