We've all become accustomed to the concept of makeup 'primers' when it comes to your base makeup or eyeshadow but recently, I've noticed of eyelash primers popping up here, there and everywhere. I don't know exactly when this became a 'thing', but there's now a product out there especially designed to be applied before your regular mascara in order to prepare your lashes for the whole process and give a better finished result. At first it seemed to be a trend more exclusive to the higher-end brands, but the other day I noticed one at my local NYX stand, so I of course picked it up to try out - both for myself and for you lovely lot too. Does it really make the difference? Let's find out...
This is the NYX Big and Loud Lash Primer (£5.50). It claims to 'give your lashes a boost', whilst 'working hand in hand with your favourite NYX mascara to enhance the length and volume of lashes'. Now obviously, whilst NYX state this to be used with a mascara from their own range, I'm pretty sure you could pair it with any lash offering of your choosing - so that's exactly what I did. The product comes with the same mascara packaging set-up, though a very simplistic version. The wand is nothing to write home about, but for a priming step, that isn't too much of an issue. I do find that whilst the wand is completely white when you take it out from the tube, the product is actually clear and surprisingly, doesn't leave your lashes like you've coated them in Tipp-Ex afterwards. In some areas, you can see tiny areas of white pigment - ensuring me that the product is actually being transferred - but for the most part, it almost looks invisible. My lashes look more separated and 'well-positioned' (if that is even a proper term) and ready to go for mascara.
I wouldn't say this stuff makes a massive difference when it comes to the finished effect of my usual mascara, but I do notice that my lashes appear a little longer and seem much less susceptible to clumps. For that reason, it's the kind of step in my beauty routine which I perhaps wouldn't crack out on a daily basis, but I definitely would if I had more time or simply wasn't wearing falsies and wanted my natural lashes to look extra fluttery. On second thoughts - maybe I will make this a daily occurrence after all...
