Liquid Lipstick Tips 'n' Tricks

Following on from Friday's post, I figured what better time to do this one that's been sitting in my 'Draft' section for ages now. Liquid lipsticks are a massive thing at the moment and they pretty much have been for what feel like the longest of times. If you don't know what they are - if so, where have you been? - in the most cases, they're a lipstick in a lipgloss-type formula which when applied, dries to a super-matte finish with amazing longevity. I love them, so many others love them and so today I thought I'd drop in with a little round-up of some of my own tips 'n' tricks for how I like to tackle them...

GOOD PREPARATION - This is a tip which I'm sure you'll have heard before whenever talk turns to the topic of liquid lipstick. Of all the lipstick formulas out there, they have to be one of (if not the most long-lasting, but of course, with that comes the fact that they're also one of the most drying options too. This isn't actually a major problem - as long as you fully prepare beforehand. Give tour pout a good scrub either with a lip polish or toothbrush and apply a thin, even layer of lip balm at the start of your makeup routine so that by the time you're ready to apply your liquid lip - your lips are smooth, soft and moisturised. This should make the finish a lot more visually appealing, stop your pout from drying out and also aid the longevity too.

...AND JUST AS GOOD REMOVAL AND AFTERCARE TOO - Just as it's essential for you to prepare well for applying a liquid lipstick, it's just as important for there to be good removal and aftercare steps in place too. With liquid lipsticks being prone to adhere themselves to your lips rather strongly, you need to have a good remover in your stash to take the whole thing off with at the end of the day. An oil-based formula is your best bet, breaking down your liquid lipstick far quicker and easier than your regular cleansers and micellar waters. Even with the best removal though, your lips may till feel (and look) a tad parched afterwards, so ensure you've got a good hydrating lip balm to slather on aswell.

CHOOSE A GOOD FORMULA - In terms of the actual liquid lipstick itself, I think the key is choosing a good formulation. Honestly, there are some amazing options out there which are rich and opaque, dry down to a comfortable finish and stay on all day - but then, there's some which aren't. Of course, it's down to personal preference and ultimately, we all want different things from our lip products and also different things work for different people (how many times can I say different in one sentence, eh?) but the key is finding 'The One' which is best for you.

LINE YOUR LIPS FIRST - I cannot stress how much a lip liner is valuable for applying a liquid lipstick (in my opinion, of course). They will help your to define the desired lip shape you're going for; create a crisp sharp outline (something that's much easier to do with a lip liner than the actual liquid lipstick itself) and can also act as a base for your liquid lip to go over the top of if you use it all-over your pout. Either opt for one which matches your natural lip colour or the shade of liquid lip you're going for and line away...

BE PATIENT - Lastly, it's super important when using a liquid lipstick to be patient - application isn't gonna be as quick as with other lip products. If you want to layer up your product to either ensure even greater longevity or simply to make a slightly-less-opaque formula 'pop' - you'll need to ensure you allow some time for the product to set between coatings. You want to ensure a finish that will set down evenly all-over your lips and also a precise, sharp line (hence why I recommend using a lip liner first) and this is not the time for errors. Just as liquid lipsticks are difficult to remove at the end of the day, they're just as hard to get off if you make a mistake when applying them. You have been warned...
