Tried and Tested: Makeup Revolution Retro Luxe Matte Lip Kits

Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the past year and a half or so, you'll be well aware of the mahoosive hype surrounding liquid lipsticks. Ever since Kylie Jenner pretty much single-handily popularised them - and then made her own, which I'm still super eager to get my hands on (and super annoyed that the whole delivery/customs fees situation probably means I won't be placing an order anytime in the near future) - the formula's been popping up here, there and everywhere. You quite literally cannot navigate any beauty shop, stand or website without coming across them - as brands try and replicate the success that Kylie's had with her brand, Kylie Cosmetics. However, while I've seen many a standard matte liquid lipstick crop up, I haven't seen a brand try to recreate the whole premise of the infamous 'Lip Kits' - until now. Makeup Revolution are a brand that are well-known for replicating popular - and usually much more expensive makeup products - and making a more affordable and accessible version that usually of pretty good quality too. As soon as I heard about these on the beauty grapevine - I knew I had to pick up one or five to give a go so that's exactly what this post is gonna be all about. Ready? Let's jump right on in...

Of all of the shades released - ranging from pretty nudes to bolder, more 'out-there' colours - I picked up four to give a go. There's 'Reign' - a pinky-nude, 'Echelon' - a cool-toned, mauvey nude, 'Noble' - a warmer, peachy-brown and 'Regal' - a true red. All very pretty, very 'me' hues that just called out to me and I just couldn't choose between them, yanno? Like the Kylie Lip Kits, each one comes packaged up in a rectangular box that houses a lip pencil and matte liquid lipstick, both in the corresponding shade. Immediately upon swatching them all, I noticed that in a couple of the shades, the two products didn't match up exactly. While when swatched on the arm, 'Reign', looks to be a pretty perfect match; on the actual lips the liner comes up just a shade darker and the lip liner for 'Echelon' is far more brown-based as opposed to mauvey. Other than that, there's no complete mismatches to be seen and when actually put into action, you can barely tell.

I was super eager to try out all of the colours pretty much as soon as they came through the post and you just know that's exactly what I did. It's safe to say my lips were dying afterwards. I did as instructed and went in with the lip liner first to outline my lips and create the shape I wanted and I have to say, I am a big fan of them. They're super creamy and quite literally glide onto the lips like a dream, requiring hardly any pressure to achieve full pigmentation. While they are super-buttery, they also have this slight waxy-ness to them which means  you are still in complete control when using them and they don't slip or move around. After lining my lips, I then went in with the matching liquid lipstick to fill in my pout and complete the look. The formula of these is quite thick in comparison to other liquid lippies I've tried in the past, but when you actually apply them onto the lips they remain fairly lightweight and you can easily control how much you apply. With all the colours, I found them to be completely opaque in one layer and they dry down pretty darn quickly to a matte finish. For the most part, they aren't as matte, matte as I'd personally like them to be - I typically prefer it when liquid lipsticks have that 'powdery' matte texture that's completely free of any tackiness - but while there is that slight bit of stickiness left behind, they do set down and are fully touch-proof nevertheless. I have noticed that good application (thin, even layers) is key for minimising this and I have also noticed that there are some shades which are more guilty of this that others - for example, 'Regal' - the bold, true red - is by far the most matte and least tacky on the lips of them all.

However, what I guess is the most important aspect and real test of any liquid lipstick is the longevity - especially in the case of these where the finish isn't properly matte, matte. Liquid lippies are infamous for being a longwearing, long-lasting (and all of that good stuff) kinda product and I obviously wanted to see how well these offerings from Makeup Revolution held out. The initial test of removing the swatches on my arm that I did especially for this post was promising - they did not come away without a heck of a lot of scrubbing and rubbing with a makeup wipe to get them off. Honestly, it was only really when I took an oil-based remover to them that they began to fully disappear and the swatches that were on my arm for the longest seemed to be the most hard-wearing - giving me high hopes for the longevity throughout the day. But, how would that translate to when I actually wore them on my lips for a significant amount of time?

Aswell as swatching them on my arm, trying them on my lips and giving my first impressions and initial reactions, I wanted to properly road-test these liquid lipsticks by wearing one all-day-long and seeing how well it wore and just generally lasted. So, the other day I did just that, wearing the lightest, most pinky nude, 'Reign'. Despite the slight tackiness on the lips, which may suggest the longevity to not be as long as you'd hope for, it hung around on my lips pretty much for the entirety of the day. It wore down a little in the centre of my lips - where things generally tend to when eating, drinking and all of that kinda good stuff - but the actual main majority of the liquid lippie was still clinging on come evening time. I touched up the very inside area occasionally and that worked completely fine - they layer well and can be reapplied without any hassle at all. At the very end of the day, when it came to taking my makeup off - it was still partially there and was pretty difficult to remove with my usual makeup remover. The liquid lipstick took some proper time and effort to take off from my lips and actually, so did the lip liner. These lip liners are probably the hardiest formula I've come across - the creamy texture really sets down after you've applied them. So, all in all - these continue to get the thumbs up from me. While they overall don't have exactly the kind of liquid lipstick finish that I'm usually into, the fact that it doesn't seem to have any compromise on the actual way the product performs - in application, longevity and so on - means they still get the thumbs up from me. I would say I'd pick up more shades, but honestly - I don't think I actually can...
