Tried and Tested: Tammi X Revolution 'Tropical Carnival' Palette

Last year, you may remember this post here where I reviewed the lovely MakeupByTammi's collaboration with Revolution - the 'Tropical Paradise' Palette! Having tried and loved SophDoesNails' palettes beforehand, I was super eager to try out what Tammi came up with and so had to pick it up and in short, I loved it - and still most definitely do. A gorgeous mix of neutrals and rich pops of colour - it's one of those eyeshadow palettes that really can do so much in terms of different looks. The quality is amazing, the price equally so - what more can you want? Well, fast forward to now and Tammi's only gone and collaborated with them again! This time, an even more colourful palette - full of proper bright, bold, 'colourful' colours and not one neutral in sight. Well, maybe one - but that's about it! Introducing, the 'Tropical Carnival' Palette...

Again, this retails at the pretty bargainous price of just £10 - yep, that's right, only a tenner! - and as always with Revolution Makeup, is easily accessible basically anywhere and everywhere. As for the palette itself - like I said, being such a major fan of Tammi's original and first collaboration, I knew I had to pick up this one too. As time's gone on, I've become gradually more and more interested in experimenting and wearing colour on my eyes, with my eyeshadow! I used to be all about neutrals only, but slowly but surely I started playing around with small amounts of colour to switch things up and gain confidence. Then, from there, perhaps more over the past couple of years or so, I've been playing around with more 'colourful' colours that are properly bright and bold - and then we come to now, when I equally love rocking colour on my eyes as much as I love a good warm-toned (or cool-toned) neutral smokey eye! So, when I saw this was going to be a proper rainbow-inspired palette, even more colourful than her first collaboration, I wasn't at all unsure about purchasing. If anything, I was so super excited about having even more colourful shadows in my collection! Of course, I don't wear proper rainbow colours on my eyes everyday, but I definitely do enjoy doing so quite a lot these days - so in my mind, adding this palette to my collection was a no-brainer.

Moving onto what's inside - I really like this colour story of this palette. Not only is it bright, bold and super-colourful - it also has a really nice concept behind it. The whole colour scheme and names all go alongside the 'carnival' theme - which in turn pays homage to Tammi's heritage too! Tammi has also handily grouped the shimmers together all in the first row (and one at the start of the second) and then the rest are all of your mattes - which makes things nice and easy to find. She has also specifically chosen shades that can not only create rainbow looks comprising of a variety of colours, but also so you can create monochromatic ones too. So not only have you got a bunch of colours you can use in-conjunction together (blues, greens and purples; reds, pinks, oranges, yellows and so on) you've also got a matching shimmer for each of those colours - meaning you can easily just throw the purples in the crease/outer corner and a purple shimmer on the lid and be done! Whether you're more confident with combining colours or want something more simple - this palette has certainly got you covered! This palette is also actually mix of eyeshadows and pressed pigments, unlike the first Tammi collaboration - hence why it's not titled an 'eye' shadow palette. Technically, the pressed pigments, as always, aren't deemed 'eye safe' - but that is simply the brand being on the safe side as they can sometimes stain your lids, unlike normal shadows. They are fully safe to apply to your eye area, don't fret! I don't think I've ever owned or used any pressed pigments yet, but I know they're a big 'thing' right now, with a lot of palettes nowadays (especially bright and bold ones) comprising of them - so I was interested in giving them a go!

As soon as this arrived in the post I was super-eager to get it open and start playing with all of the shades - and that's exactly what I've done ever since! Because this is a virtually neutrals-free palette, there were a couple of times I've worn eyeshadow when I didn't use it - because I either couldn't play around with proper colour or just didn't want to - but apart from that, I've used it pretty exclusively since having it in my hands. And actually, even though you may assume you could only get full-on colour looks from this palette, you can actually make pretty 'wearable' looks (even though I hate that word cause in my opinion, everything is wearable if you want it to be!) more often than you may first think. Depending on the colours you use together and how you apply them, even the brighter shades combined together can be easily dialled up or down as you wish - which I really like.

So, I've used this palette a fair few times so far and I'd say I've managed to get a pretty good grasp of it. I've used a wide range of the colours, a lot of the mattes and a lot of the shimmers and created a handful of different looks and so far, I have to admit that I'm on the fence. I know! I started using this palette using perhaps my most-preferred technique - where I apply my eye primer/base and lightly set it with powder - and for the most part, I didn't get along so well using it this way. Some shades worked perfectly fine, but others just not so much. So, instead I started using my other favourite technique - applying my base or primer of choice and not setting it at all, just going straight in with packing on my shadows. And oh my, these mattes really do apply so much more pigmented from the off over a wet base and they blend much easier and nicer too. And shimmer-wise, whether I stuck with the same base for a softer eye look, or cut my crease/lid beforehand - as long as that base was still wet (so, if I cut my crease, I ensured I went in straight away with my shimmers straight over the top), shimmers were instantly more pigmented, intense and foiled-like. I guess for the shimmers in particular, if you didn't do that, wetting your brush before applying would probably help too - I certainly need to give that trick a go with this palette. So, in essence, with this palette I'd definitely say you need a wet base for both your mattes and shimmers (and possibly a wet brush for your shimmers too!). I'm not sure whether this is because this palette contains pressed pigments as well as shadows - as I know pressed pigments often require a slightly different and particular technique and application to get the best finish out of them. Often, they need a wet base or brush and a a pack-then-blend method to get the best application - and in the end, that's what I found worked best for this palette. Who knows! Either way, I'm so, so pleased I finally found out how to make this palette work as well as it deserves to.

So, all in all, I think I can finally say that I give this palette a thumbs up! Used in the right way, these shadows work like a dream. Pigmented, easy to blend mattes; intense, foiled-like shimmers. Yay! I'm so happy because I was so wanting to love this palette as much as I do the first Tammi collaboration. Not only that, I was so excited by the gorgeous packaging and bright, colourful colour scheme inside! And definitely when I learnt the knack of how to make it work, it's awesome! Though I definitely feel the formula is different to the 'Tropical Paradise' and some shadows certainly require a slightly different, particular method of application - now I know how to use it properly, I think I love it just as much. Perfect for when I want to go all-out bright, bold, colourful on my eyes; with a variety of both mattes and shimmers so I can create a whole look using this one palette. Whether I want to combine different colours together or go more simple and monochromatic by pairing the matching shimmers and mattes together - you really can create so many different, pretty, vibrant looks from this palette. I'm pretty happy to have this palette in my collection...
