Battle Of The Revolution Foundations - Conceal and Define VS Conceal and Hydrate

As soon as I saw and later tried out the new Revolution Conceal and Hydrate Foundation and matching Concealer, I just knew I'd have to do a comparison post between that range and their predecessors - Conceal and Define Foundation and Concealer! Because whilst there are a few similarities between the two collections, there are of course many differences too. And now I feel like I know both formulations pretty well, what better time to give a proper run-down of them all? I also thought I'd split this post into two to make things a little clearer and focus on the foundations in one and the concealers in the other and guess what - today's time for the former!

  • PACKAGING - Both foundations are packaged in very similar components. Both tall bottles with a frosted glass exterior, a rose gold lid and a label wrapped round to tell you exactly what the foundation is. The only real difference is the original C&D has an all rose gold label; whilst the C&H is pale pink with a rose gold trim! The other main thing is also of course that you unscrew the rose gold lid on the C&D to pull out a large doe foot applicator, but with the C&H you simply pop it off to reveal a traditional pump.
  • FORMULA/CONSISTENCY - I find the C&D to be much thicker in texture, whilst the C&H is a little thinner and more 'runny'. To be honest, I was kinda expecting that considering the former is more matte and has full-full coverage from the get go, whilst the latter is dewier and has a more medium-full, buildable coverage to it - so that's nothing too surprising - but something to point out anyway! I also find the two formulas have distinctively different scents too. C&D is more fruity whilst C&H has more of a standard, 'chemically' fragrance to it. I kinda prefer the scent of the C&D, not gonna lie, but both scents are so subtle though and once you apply either foundation onto the skin, you don't notice them at all.
  • SHADES - Revolution claim the two ranges - both foundations and concealers - match up between the the two different formulas. So, I obviously had to test that theory out to see how true it really is! I wear F2 in the C&D Foundation, so I decided to go for the same shade in the C&H. And honestly, whilst they are very, very similar - I wouldn't say they are spot-on identical. 'F2' in C&D is slightly lighter and more neutral/yellow-toned, whilst 'F2' in C&H is just a drop darker (only a smidgen though really) and is also slightly more pink. It is pretty close though! And honestly, once you apply both foundations onto the skin, you really can't notice the difference and to me, the shades look virtually the same and both work for my skin-tone perfectly fine - which is the main thing, right?
  • APPLICATION - Like I said earlier, C&D has the doe foot applicator, whilst C&H has your standard pump - so that's the first main difference in application I guess! With C&D, you use the doe foot to almost paint the product onto your face - I personally find two-to-three dips back into the bottle are enough for my full face (or at least, one full layer), as the doe foot holds a decent amount too! With the C&H however, you of course will be using the pump to dispense product onto the back of your hand (or perhaps a palette if wanting to be fully hygienic or if you're a working MUA), choose your applicator of choice and you're good to go! I actually find with the C&H that I only need one full pump for my entire face/one full layer all over if you're wanting to build the coverage up. I know, but the pump just seems to give out so much product at once that one full pump is more than enough! FYI - I use a dampened sponge to apply and blend in both foundations as I prefer the way it works for both formulas. Both apply and blend super easily - C&H slightly more due to it being more hydrating and having a slightly thinner texture, but dramatically differently - so that's all good!
  • FINISH - Then we come to the Finish! And actually, there's not too many major differences. First up - Conceal and Define. Once that's all blended in, you can tell it's got more of a demi-matte effect. As I've said before, it's not a fully matte-matte foundation as it works well with my dry skin (providing I've got a hydrating primer underneath) but's it's definitely more matte than other foundations in my collection - and certainly more so than the new Conceal and Hydrate! This foundation, on the other hand, immediately has a more radiant, 'juicy' finish - if you get what I mean. Again, it's not a super-dewy foundation but's is certainly more glowy from the get-go than the C&D. They both sit on the skin super nicely and smoothly, though due to it being more matte I would say the C&D looks a little heavier. It also feels a little heavier too, C&H feels slightly more lightweight on the skin - likely due to it being a more hydrating formula! Coverage-wise, C&D is pretty full coverage from the get-go, whilst C&H I would say provides more of a strong medium coverage in one layer. That's just with the one layer of each though and honestly, it's not too different. C&H can be built up easily too and once you  do build it up, I would say it gets to more of a full coverage that the C&D has. So basically, there are noticeable differences in finish between the two foundations, but only what you would kinda expect from putting a demi-matte base and a hydrating one against each other. I do really like the way both look and feel on my skin - it just depends on what type of effect I want and what I'm doing my makeup for really - and that's the main thing!
  • WEAR-TIME/LONGEVITY - Finally, of course I had to compare the longevity of both foundations - as that's one of the main things you look for in a good base, right? And actually, I'd say both last pretty impeccably on my skin throughout the day/night! I've worn both foundations for the same amount of time in the past and they both stay in place without any transferring, moving about, fading, creasing, separating - none of that at all - and so if it's long-wear you're after, I think either of these foundations would be a good shout! I guess it's more how they look that's the main differential factor here. With the C&D, it certainly stays looking more matte-ish on my skin but come the end of the day/night it still doesn't look dry or cakey at all - probably due to the fact that it doesn't get anymore matte that it starts off being, which is a great plus-point for me and my normal/dry skin! However, when it comes to the Conceal and Hydrate, whilst it definitely stays glowy, I'd say it actually get a little more so the more you wear it! My skin doesn't look too shiny or greasy/oily in anyway but I would definitely say this foundation gets more radiant as time goes on. It still stays in place and doesn't fade or break apart though and having drier skin, I personally actually kinda like it!
