With so many eyeshadows available, many being some variation of shimmer, it's easy to get carried away and underestimate the statement of taking it back to basics. The classic matte eye.
I love a good shimmer shadow, don't get me wrong, but occasionally I find myself making things more simple in the eye department and shelving the notion of anything glittery on my eyes. I find it looks far 'cleaner' and I can incorporate a far wider variety of makeup looks this way.
For example, I love to wear what I like to call a 'contoured eye'. By this I mean applying two or three shadows all of similar colouring which enhance what is already there, much like standard facial contouring, without going too far and creating a smokey eye. I like to apply mattes throughout for this, to create the most natural effect - a matte nude/champagne all over the lid, a slightly darker beige tone in the outer corner and a slightly darker chocolate brown in the crease. All lightly applied and thoroughly blended, this makes for a classic *insert corny phrase* 'My Lids But Better' look.

The key to a good matte eye though of course lies in a kick ass formula. No room for chalky, powdery pigments here. It's all about the buttery shadows that almost just glide onto your eye, making for both ease of blendability when applied and it-will-not-budge staying power when it's time to take it off.
I'm curious - what type of eyeshadow gal are you?
