I never quite realised how small my wardrobe was until this time last year when, having got my first job, I started seriously buying myself some clothes for wintertime. And of course those typically take up the most room and so when time rolled round to spring and there was the need to buy some summer gear, I found there was just nowhere to put it all. It was like my wardrobe had been eaten by my knitwear and various forms of jackets. I needed space and, having to make do with what I had, I turned to something a bit unexpected and something I'd never tried before. Vacuum packing.
Now for this I was inspired by Lily who suggested the technique as part of a video of hers where she showed how she sorts her wardrobe out for the coming season (you can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vVCxJ-hHyw). She showed herself vacuum packing a load of her clothes. This is essentially putting some clothes in a plastic pouch, zipping it up and then using a vacuum nozzle to suck the air out, compressing the pouch down until it emerges as something that slightly resembles the packs of fresh mackerel you buy in the supermarket. Very swish.
I gave it a go with a pack I picked up from - would you believe it - Poundland of all places and I was utterly amazed at how these little bags can be used to condense your wardrobe down. I bought them after Lily's video was published and so they were primarily employed for any winter bits I had taking up the valuable room. They were easy to use and all summer long stayed compressed in my under bed storage so I was a very happy (and slightly less cramped) bunny. With the weather starting to take a turn for the colder, I felt the time had come to open them back up and take everything out so I could repeat the same process, only this time for my summer clothing. And that was exactly what I did just a few weekends back, and again it was all a very easy, fuss-free affair, yet one that makes such a difference to my wardrobe.
Have you ever tried vacuum packing your clothes?
