Getting The Most Out Of An Eyeshadow Palette...

Everyone loves a good ol' eyeshadow palette - right? I definitely have built up a pretty large collection over the years and I must admit that probably of all makeup items, eyeshadow palettes are my particular weakness. I just can't help but collect them up, from different brands, ranges and especially, different colour schemes. However, now owning so many, it's become pretty important that I actually get the use out of them - not only the palettes themselves, but all of the varying shades inside too. Personally, I do like to think that I get a decent amount of use across most of the shades in each of my eye palettes, but I definitely am guilty of sometimes getting in a rut. I feel a lot of people have the same kind of 'issue' (#FirstWorldProblems), so I figured I'd put together this post today with some little tips 'n' tricks that I like to keep in mind when *attempting* to get the most out of my rather copious amounts of eyeshadow palettes...

STORAGE, STORAGE, STORAGE - First things first, I really feel the first important thing is that you actually store your eyeshadow palettes in the way that best enables you make the most use out of all of them. For example, just by simply organising them in your drawers into particular colour families could really help you in knowing exactly where all of your different colours are so when you know what types of tones you want, you know exactly where to go. Also, just generally having all of your palettes on good display, wherever you keep them, is always a good way of making sure you actually reach them, see them and actually have a regular delve inside of them too...

BREAK THINGS DOWN - When you actually open your palettes up, especially so if they contain more of a larger selection of shades - try and break things down. Whether that be by formula - mattes, shimmers, satins, foils etc. - or by colours, this can really help in identifying what you have and what types of looks you can create - and in doing so, hopefully inspire you to experiment and step outside of the box a little. Initially, you may only see your usual colour combinations, but take a closer look and try and visually combine different colours, in different types of eye looks - and then give it a go!

EASE YOURSELF IN - If you're finding you're creating the same types of looks over and over again, of the same type of tones - and so, only using a small selection of shades in your palette - try just gradually mixing things up by using some untouched or lesser-used colours. Even for an 'everyday look', try choosing a different shade for the lid, or mixing in another colour into the crease or outer corner will mix things up, but still in a pretty easy way...

...AND THEN MIX IT UP - Once you've started experimenting more with new, or at least lesser-used shades, try mixing things up even more so. Stick to those types of shades exclusively, try out different eye looks and just generally push yourself to try out new things. You may be surprised at the result (and feel a lot better about the amount of palettes you own too)...

THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX - If there are any shades which you simply cannot make work, try and utilise them in a different way. Don't like or tend to use cool-toned browns? If there's one which is a pretty good match for your brows, try using it as a brow powder. Or, depending on your skintone, you could even use it as a contour colour. Certain shimmery shades can too perhaps be used as highlighters, again, depending on your skin-colour. Basically, try and think outside of the beauty box and you may well find some hidden gems...
