We all know how much I love, love, LOVE buying new makeup. Whether it's new releases, or simply things that are brand new to me - I'll always enjoy it - but over time, I definitely think I've learnt to become fairly good (even if I do say so myself) at shopping 'smartly' for my makeup, if you get what I mean. By this, I don't just mean in terms of getting the best price/deal possible, but more about trying to ensure I only buy things I really want or need and am likely to enjoy and use. Basically, I don't want to waste my money (as I'm sure none of us do) and I kinda feel like for the most part, I sort of manage to avoid this. Let's get talking about how...
KNOW WHAT YOU LIKE - I really think that one of the main 'things' you want to try and think about when attempting to 'shop smart' for your makeup is just knowing what you tend to like and also use the most. So let's say you're really not into liquid highlighters for example - you're probably best avoiding them, even if it is a really exciting new launch that really tempts you or is from your favourite brand. Obviously, it's good to try new things and there will sometimes be exceptions where you find something that breaks the mould, but if that occasion is not that often- you might be best staying away. You can still have a rough idea of what you like and experiment with makeup, don't forget that!
DO YOUR RESEARCH - Another major point comes in the sense of really doing your research before buying anything! I know it may seem obvious, but especially nowadays - with blog posts and YouTube videos aplenty - you can find out so, so much about a product before actually handing over any cash. Before, you could at the most you could do was to try a product in-store or look at stock photos online - and if you could only buy online, you were even more stuck. But now you have access to photos from 'real people', swatches available online, reviews, tutorials and so much more! And personally, I always find that taking advantage of all of these super-handy resources really helps me in 'shopping smart' for my makeup and really reduces me buying things I don't like or won't really use.
TRY IN STORE - As I said above, before online beauty community, the main way you could 'try before you buy' was mainly trying in-store. And even now, it's still of course a really good way to get an idea of a product! If anything, it may still be the 'best' way as you actually seeing and swatching the product for yourself, 'in real life' and possibly, if you have any other makeup counters nearby, you could even compare it to other products you already own!
TAKE YOUR TIME - Another major thing I'd suggest with makeup shopping is to take your time. Nowadays there can be so much pressure on 'buy, buy, buy' all of the time. With new makeup products and brands launching here, there and everywhere 24/7, it can be easy to snap things up from the get-go, without taking a second to think about it and whether you really want/need it, will use it and so on. So, really, I guess what I'm saying is - just think about for a little, before taking the plunge and making the purcahse. Sounds simple and straightforward, but it can really make a difference in you not feeling like you're always wasting money on makeup. Not only that, but this can also allow more time for reviews, swatches, 'real photos' to start popping up, before you buy the product yourself. Cause, it may well turn out that the product you've been eagerly eyeing up ain't really all that after all...
REVISIT YOUR STASH - Finally, before buying new stuff - why not trying revisiting and 'shopping' your stash at home! Cause who knows what you may find lurking in there? Products that are pretty similar, if not completely alike to what you were considering buying? Products that you completely forgot you even had? The possibilities are endless! Try having a browse over what you have already - you never know what you may find and it may well stop your buying something that you don't really want or need...
