Festive Nails - Five Ways #DitsyDecember

If you haven't guessed already by my copious amounts of 'Polish Pick' posts - I love painting my nails. And I especially love it even more so when occasions like Christmas come around - when I can go even more all-out with everything I lacquer onto my talons! But today, rather than sharing my latest nail look, I thought I'd simply give you some more general inspiration when it comes to getting Christmassey on your ol' claws! Whether you want to go all-in or maybe just add a touch of festive-ness - I've got a few options...

FESTIVE HUES - First off - just go for a classic Christmassey colour! This is perhaps the easiest way of getting festive on your nails as you'll likely have something to fit this category already in your collection. You don't necessarily need anything metallic or glittery - just a standard creme finish will do! From a classic, true red to an earthy, forest green or maybe even a rich plum - these are all colours that scream out 'Christmas' and you can use in a traditional creme format and it woks a treat - so you might not even need to add anything new to your collection!

MAKE IT METALLIC - If you do want to step it up a little, try out a metallic finish! We all know all things glittery or shimmery - in whatever format or shade - will always call out 'Christmas' so with this one you have even greater flexibility in terms of what shade/s you use - just as long as it's got a metallic finish, you'll be onto a winner! I also love metallic polishes as you can use them alone or they can be used as a base for glitter polishes to be layered over the top to add even more dimension and in this case, festive sparkle!

GO FOR GLITTER - ...So, with that in mind, let's talk glitter - yeah? Glitter polishes are great for this time of year as not only do they, once again, immediately get your nails looking festive - they can be used in a variety of ways too, depending on the polishes you have or the look you're going for. If you've got a glitter with a clear base it can in theory be lacquered over the top of any shade underneath you fancy or if you've got one with a bit of a coloured base, just choose a similar creme or metallic to use as a base and you'll be good to go! Or, maybe if the coverage of the glitter you're using is high enough, you could even build it up in a few light layers and rock it alone. The choice is all yours...

TOP IT OFF - Maybe you want to go another step further or maybe you've got a standard creme polish or metallic finish and just want to add a little extra somethin' somethin' - then a glitter topcoat will be for you! With these, they usually always have a clear base so the sky really is the limit in terms of what polish/polishes you can us them as a finishing touch for. Not only that, they'll also work as a regular top coat would too - sealing your finished look into place, making it super-shiny and last far longer without chipping off too. And in terms of the added extras, you can get anything from warm, golden reflects to cooler, silver tones and even holographic flecks too. There's ones with finer glitter that just add a more subtle shimmery glow all over the nail and then some with more chunky, 'noticeable' glitter that almost creates a confetti-like effect. Depending on the look you're after and base you've got on underneath - they'll all work and come off differently so just have a good think about the combo you're putting together first...

CHRISTMAS-THEMED DESIGNS - Finally, if you're into your actual nail 'art' (like I wish I could be) you can always really get your creative juices flowing and actually draw on some festive-themed designs on your nails! Invest in a good set of nail art brushes and use whatever colours you're after and the world is your oyster in terms of the patterns or shape you can add on. Just think of anything Christmassey - from snowflakes to Santa hats, baubles to bells - and either free-hand or I think nowadays you can even get pre-made stencils to help you along. Add a top coat to seal things into place and you're set (literally)...
