Tried and Tested: Revolution Conceal and Define Full Coverage Foundation

Now, this is pretty damn exciting - isn't it? Remember all the way back in January when Revolution (the 'Makeup Revolution') released their now infamous Conceal and Define Concealer and everyone and their Nan went mad for it? I quickly gave in and tried it myself and let's just say, I loved it. It's quickly become my favourite, go-to concealer - full coverage, easy to blend, gorgeous finish and awesome lasting-power - and I feel like pretty much everyone who tried it felt the same. And then, a week or so ago they announced two very exciting pieces of information. Not only was a 'SuperSize' version of said concealer being launched (anyone who's tried it will know of the struggles of the original running our rather quickly), but also - there was finally going to be a matching foundation! Yay! Having loved the concealer so much, I think we can all agree than we were hopeful of a foundation in the same range being added to the line-up and finally, our prayers were answered. As soon as they launched online, I quickly picked up what I believed to be my perfect shade (I liked using 'F1' in their Fast Base Foundation, so figured it'd be a good colour for me in this foundation too) and basically the day after they arrived, threw it on my face for the first time to see what it was all about. Yeah, I was that excited. Let's take a closer look and see what I thought...

First off, let's start with the packaging and as expected, it basically looks like a bigger version of the concealer - with it's rounded shape and metallic, rose gold trim. However, that's not all, as open it up and you'll find that it also holds the same doe-foot applicator. Personally, aside from their Fast Base Foundation Stick that I tried out earlier on this year, I've never really tried a foundation before that doesn't have a pump bottle so this is kind of a new thing for me. I know some have questioned how good this is in terms of sanitary reasons, but really, it's no different from your typical concealer and so it doesn't really bother me too much. I personally really like how it means you can really control how much product you use and exactly where you place it and also in theory, it should enable you to get every last drop out of the bottle and thus, reduce wastage of your precious product - which is always good, right? All in all, I really like the packaging and how it matches up to the concealer and also, how luxury it feels/looks considering it's priced at only £9. Like I said, it's decorated with rose gold trim and the bottle itself is also super weighty and has a frosted glass finish too. Inside you get 23ml, which is just a little under the standard 30ml, but considering the super-affordable price I don't really think you can complain - well, if it is good, of course. And I guess that's what we come to next...

Like all of their skin-based launches so far, Revolution have absolutely killed the game and came out with an incredible shade range. From the fairest of fair, to the deepest of deep and everything in-between, it really is awesome to see such a wide and diverse shade range, especially so considering how affordable and accessible Revolution are. There's a grand total of 24 shades available in this foundation (which I believe is how many are now in the updated shade range of the matching concealer) and the shades do indeed correspond between the ranges, which is also really great too. I should imagine that the majority of people, of all different skin-tones, will be able to find their perfect match from this range, which is always something we all want - especially so in 2018.
So, then we come to the foundation itself and application - the exciting bit, right? First things first, I think the doe-foot makes application pretty easy, though it doesn't hold as much product as I thought it would (the concealer does hold a lot of product in one dip so I expected the same). I had to dip back in a few time to get enough for a full face, but it's not too much of a big deal really. I was a little unsure at first as to how much I'd need (seeing as I usually measure out pumps on the back of my hand) so I went in with a few swipes to begin with and took my typical preferred applicator - my good ol' Real Techniques sponge, dampened - and got started with blending and let me tell you, it blended in like a dream. It did not take long at all to completely buff it all in and once it was, it looked pretty damn good - even if I do say so myself. I really, really like the finish of this foundation. I picked up the shade 'F1' (the same shade I use in the Fast Base Stick Foundation and also the matching concealer) and it matched me perfectly, as I hoped it would. I actually tried it out for the first time without a primer (as I wanted to see how it performed by itself) and considering all it had was my regular day cream underneath, it sat so wonderfully on my skin, giving it an almost gave a blurred-like finish. My skin just looked so super-smooth and any areas that usually may pick up on some texture or pores were gone, without even having used any sort of blurring, smoothing, pore-filling primer beforehand. I was especially impressed also with how seamless and flawless it looked on my nose - a usual trouble area for me when it comes to my foundation. The foundation claims to be demi-matte, which at first did put me off picking this up as being a dry skin gal, I usually prefer satin/dewy bases, but I am so glad I still gave it a go. Though it definitely is more matte than other foundations I use, it's not too matte - if you know what I mean. It didn't make my skin look dry or chalky and it certainly didn't make my skin feel at all dehydrated in anyway either. I also really noticed how amazingly lightweight this foundation felt on my skin - despite being full coverage and me definitely building it up to be so. My skin didn't feel at all heavy and weighed down my foundation and it just generally felt super-comfortable, which is always a good thing.

I actually went in with the matching Conceal and Define Concealer afterwards to conceal around my face and - as I hoped - the two together worked so well and just added even more so to the super-flawless finish. Seriously, I loved how my skin looked having used this foundation and even more so when used in conjunction with the concealer too. A definite 'dream team' combination, for sure. After I had finished my base, with the 'demi-matte' finish in mind, I only set (or 'baked') the areas of my face that I always do with loose powder - under my eyes, around my smile lines and so on - and then just lightly set the rest of my face with a pressed powder and I'd say this worked really well with this foundation for me and my skin type. I actually gently touched my skin straight after applying this foundation and it almost felt and looked like it had self-set itself - whether that be down to the matte finish or the formula itself, I'm not sure - so perhaps if you don't typically like or need to set your face or have a more dry skin type, I would perhaps even say that this foundation could be left 'un-set'. Afterwards, I obviously continued with the rest of my makeup - bronzer, contour, highlighter etc. - and everything I applied on top did so beautifully and easily, looked really good and my foundation wasn't disrupted by doing so either.

Coverage-wise, this foundation claims to be full coverage and after the first application, I'd personally say it wasn't full, full coverage but perhaps medium-full (definitely slightly more than my usual foundations I use which are more straight-up medium). However, I did go in with another layer to see how it builds and after that, I would say it gave me a full coverage finish as it says it does. It also didn't disrupt the finish or take away any coverage I had already achieved either, which I know can sometimes happen also. I really like how this foundation is buildable and how you can sheer it out if you want to, but also really build up than coverage if that's what you prefer and also, with the doe foot applicator, you can really control where you want more or less of it too. Personally, I really liked both how it looked when I used less and also when I built it up more so I really like how there's some flexibility there in how I can use this foundation. The coverage this base gives - especially so when built up to its highest potential - combined with the demi-matte finish is just a dream

Once applied, as I said, it looked pretty damn good - I was really pleased with the finished result - and I have to say, it stayed looking basically identical to how I left it all day long. The first day I tried it, I wore it for around 6 hours and by the time it came to taking my makeup off in the evening, I couldn't really notice any many major difference to how it looked when it was first applied. The coverage was the same, nothing had faded in anyway - neither the foundation itself nor any of the products I applied over the top - and it was still sitting super-well on my skin. There were a few minor creases around my smile lines and chin, but to be honest, I only really noticed this towards the very end of the day - by this time which pretty much every foundation tends to do this. The finish, however, was still just as smooth - there were no areas that had broken up or separated, my skin still looked very 'blurred' and my pores were still invisible! Though more matte than I'm used to, my skin still didn't look dry or flaky and combined with the high coverage, my face still didn't appear or feel cakey or heavy in anyway. Basically, I was still very, very impressed.

I've actually worn this foundation a couple of times again since then - one of which I wore it for even longer (around 10 hours) - just to really see whether it was a good'un and all in all, it all stayed pretty much the same. I tested it out with the use of a face primer underneath this time to see how it compared to without and I didn't really notice any difference at all - which is a good thing, I feel, as I personally like to be able to use my foundations with and without a base underneath. I also used less product and built it up less this time and again, I was still really happy with the final result. So, whether you want to sheer this foundation out a little or really build and layer it up more - I'd say this will work for you.

So, all in all, I'd say this foundation gets the big thumbs up from me. Not only is it amazingly affordable and accessible and comes in a wide and diverse range of shades, the formula itself is just awesome. I honestly cannot really fault it. The way blends so easily, sits so beautifully and lightweight on my skin, has such amazing high coverage (but in a way that you can control over how much or little you want) and the way it lasts so impeccably throughout the day - I love it. I think I may have found my new favourite, go-to foundation...
